Moses Inspects God’s House (Exodus 39:43)

It’s one of the oddities of our marriage that my wife and I have never lived in a “used” house. When we got married, a new neighborhood was underway in our town and we rented one of the first homes built. A couple years later, we built a house of our own in that same neighborhood.

In both cases, I enjoyed heading over to watch the construction and monitor the progress. As I’ve mentioned before, DIY is not my specialty, so I’m always impressed by people who have the skill and ability to make something out of a pile of materials.

In the case of the second house, I also got to have the final say in when the work was done. I walked through the house, examined every nook and cranny, and gave the final approval, after which we signed the paperwork and took possession of the house.

That’s the same type of role that Moses fulfilled with the Tabernacle. In Exodus 39:43, after Bezalel and Oholiab present the Tabernacle to Moses, he “examines the work.”

But what was he looking for? He didn’t care if it suited his tastes; the Text says plainly that he approved it after seeing that they had done everything the Lord commanded. He acted as a sort of home inspector, performing a final walk through to make sure God’s Tabernacle met His specifications.

Hebrews 3 talks about this dynamic when it says that Moses was faithful in God’s house “as a servant.” Jesus, on the other hand, was the Son of the house. It was His house to begin with; Moses was just the hired help.

But how faithful Moses was in this role! Not only did he help guide God’s people in faithfulness towards Him, but he also made sure God’s house was perfect. Just as Hebrews 3 talks about, Moses was faithful in God’s house in every single way.

That’s the same relationship I aspire to have with God, as well. I am not Moses, nor am I tasked with leading a few million people through the wilderness. But I am tasked with leading my family, preaching to a local church, and working with people that I study with on a personal level. In those instances, I need to be just as faithful as Moses.

Jesus’ story of the Rich Man and Lazarus set in a modern day context.

Matt is a powerful hedge fund manager in New York City. Liam is a down-on-his-luck homeless man that spends his days watching everyone else pass him by. Their worlds are completely separate, until a tragic event leaves one person’s future in shambles, and the other finds the peace that they have sought after for so long.

“The Broker and the Bum” is a modern version of Jesus’ famous story from Luke 16, complete with all the same themes of the original. It’s a story of benevolence, greed, and the perils of ignoring those that God wants us to notice.
