The Song of Moses in 2024 (Exodus 15:1)

There are a few different “Songs of Moses” in Scripture (Exodus 15; Deuteronomy 32; Psalm 90). All of them are slightly different and/or serve a different purpose, but they all speak to one central theme:

Deliverance.

In all three songs, Moses recounts a portion of Israel’s history to demonstrate God’s loyalty to His people, deliverance from danger, and hope for the future. Israel was to memorize these songs to fortify their faith in God.

Today is the last day of 2024. What would your song be for this year?

Take a piece of paper (or make a new note on your smartphone), and create three sections. In the first, write “Who is God?” This mirrors the first five verses of Exodus 15, where Moses described God as a Warrior, someone who stands ready to protect His name.

In the second section, write “What Did I See?” In Exodus 15:6-10, Moses recounts  the image of seeing the Egyptian army drown in the Sea and the waters that “stood up like a heap.”

In the third section, write “How Did My Faith Grow?” The last section of Moses’ song (Exodus 15:11-18) talks about the reaction of the peoples around Israel to God’s power. Some of them trembled, some of them became “motionless,” but all of them recognized His glory.

Think back on this last year and fill in each of these blanks. Try to keep it as personal as possible, jotting down notes inside each section that are specific to moments in your year. How did what you see throughout the year impact your understanding of God?

But try also to keep it impersonal. As you write, remember that you’re not the one shaping God—you’re the one learning about God and who He is. If this year saw a shift in your family that turned people you love back to Him, He’s the God of second chances. He didn’t change (Hebrews 13:5), but your understanding of Him did.

Keep this note close to you for the next few weeks as we get into 2025. Ideally, this is an exercise you could do every year to see how your faith develops over the years. If you’re musically or poetically inclined, write a few verses down that encompass all three of those points so that you can memorize it.

The more you can learn from your growth in 2024, the better equipped you’ll be in 2025 to grow even more.

Jesus’ story of the Rich Man and Lazarus set in a modern day context.

Matt is a powerful hedge fund manager in New York City. Liam is a down-on-his-luck homeless man that spends his days watching everyone else pass him by. Their worlds are completely separate, until a tragic event leaves one person’s future in shambles, and the other finds the peace that they have sought after for so long.

“The Broker and the Bum” is a modern version of Jesus’ famous story from Luke 16, complete with all the same themes of the original. It’s a story of benevolence, greed, and the perils of ignoring those that God wants us to notice.
